Physician’s Formula Organic Wear Mascara Review

To say that I was buying my new Organic Wear Mascara with fear and trepidation is an understatement of the century. I have long ago learned that getting the mascara right is the toughest task for the natural makeup industry.

And I really needed a mascara. No room for error.

So I went to Wal-Mart. Because they have the best return policy. Just in case.

And I bought a regular big-brand mascara as well. Just in case.

So yah, I was one biased customer.

But I worried for nothing. The mascara IS good. For me, at least. But if you want to know more details, here is the really detailed review:

Product Name:

Organic Wear Mascara, by Physician’s Formula, also referred to as Natural Origin Mascara

About the brand:

Organic Wear is a Brand created by Physician’s Formula. You can read my Physician’s Formula brand overview here.

Price:

I paid just over $14 Canadian. It is about 10US dollars in the US.

Certifications:

EcoCert Certified Organic.

Packaging:

This is one of the most innovative packaging to hit the mascara world in a long time. The tube and handle are stylized with the handle looking like some kind of leaf. The brush itself is very flexible, which I think is a pro – it was easy to reach all the lashes. The brush is also 100% recyclable, which is a bonus.

Reading the ingredients:

The packaging says that 100% of ingredients are of Natural Origin and 47% are Organic. Which is commendable given that EcoCert requires only 10% of ingredients to be Organic and 95% to be natural. Basically, Organic Wear is taking its “natural” and “organic” claims seriously.

Reading the insert (or Other claims):

The back of the box is dedicated to 100%. It list a whole set of features for which Organic Wear Mascara scored a 100:

100% Natural Origin Mascara
100% Free of Synthtetic Solvents
100% Natural Origin Biopolymers – for clump free lashes
100% Natural Origin Preservatives
100% Natural Origin Rice Protein & Organic Tapioca Starch – naturally boost volume. Organic Beeswax 00 for a buildable formula.
100% Natural Origin Color Pigments
100% Free of Petroleum By Products.

It’s also 100% Cruelty Free.

It’s also hypoallergenic and fragrance free.

Scent:

I’ve read some other reviews where users have complained about the smell. Granted, it doesn’t smell like roses. It is fragrance-free, after all. But it doesn’t smell awful either. And it’s going on your lashes, not your nose. (Though I did smudge my nose while doing the smell test – it still didn’t bother me.)

Performance:

I applied it very carefully and had no clumps or smudges. It looked very natural on my lashes. I didn’t even feel the need for a second coat. After I applied it I accidentally hit the lashes with my finger and a couple of them stuck together – I used the brush to separate them without any issues. I didn’t smudge – I wore it for most of the day and didn’t have any problems. The next day I did two coats (very nice lashy look) and even a few time scratched my eye (carefully) – still no smudging.

Tip: to ensure perfect distribution and no clumping use an eyebrow brush or a toothpick to separate lashes you accidentally stuck together… But make sure you don’t poke your eye!

Verdict:

For such a low price (as far as organic mascaras go) this mascara is outperforming all expectations. No, it’s not water-proof – no does it claim to be. If you are going out in the rain or are headed for a serious sweat at the gym, this might not be for you. But for an everyday normal application it’s perfect.

I liked it. I liked it a lot. I’m keeping it for sure. The mainstream brand backup package is going back to Wal-Mart…

P.S: If you live in the USA, for a limited time (till the end of 2009) you can get a rebate on this mascara. Here is a rebate form from the company’s site: http://www.physiciansformula.com/rebates/2009/ow-mascara-rebate.pdf

Hi,

I like the articles you put up as I too have a great deal of interest in skin care but I cant seem to subscribe to your blog. The RSS is giving me all these strange symbols.

I like the mascara but OMG, the smell is killing me!!!

4 julena { 06.06.09 at 9:37 am }

Meredith — I’m still using it. So far it’s my mascara of choice. I don’t know why the smell isn’t bothering me. It sort of reminds me of sunflower oil smell, which I like :)

I might be weird, but I kind of like the smell of it o_o;; And it seems to work fine. I just need to wait a minute or two before putting on my glasses. The first time I used it, it smudged a little on my lenses.

I was really excited about the Organic Mascara. Sorry, big disappointment. The mascara always flakes and gets in my eyes. Gave it another try or two, thought might be the air, same problem. It can be removed very nicely with facial cleansers or bar of soap. I would like to try another product of Physicians Formula.

I’ve been impressed so far by the PF Organics line. Especially for a drugstore brand, they’re doing really well. We reviewed this mascara on Truth In Aging and agree with your sentiments!
It doesn’t have parabens or other synthetic preservatives. And the smell is a bit funny but it doesn’t contain perfume or artificial scents, so that’s good.

I have recently tried the Physican’s formula Organic mascara and was very surprised how this natural product gave my lashes length, definition and also color. My eyes are very sensitive this mascara does not irritate my eyes at all, I will buy this mascara again :)

Hi there! I came across your article of the Best Organic Makeup Lines and I saw that you recommended Sante and Logona but there was no website posted to buy the products. I get mine from naturaleurope.com. They are reasonably priced compared to the other brands featured. I do not recommend their mascaras though. The Organic Wear one from Physician’s Formula is way better, and it doesn’t hurt that it’s only US $10.00. For that price I don’t even mind the smell!

I am using the organic formula mascara, do to a lack of finding the mineral wear mascara. I have extremely sensitive eyes and skin, and have such problems using any type of make-up. It’s great for sensitive eyes and skin, and the brush is wonderful!!! I wish Physician’s Formula would put that same brush in the mineral wear mascara, and keep the product coming. All the mineral wear products are their finest products. So why do they want to change what is already perfect. Please don’t Physician’s Formula.

Hi there, I tried this and was very enthusiastic but it made my eyes itch. I have yet to find a good organic mascara that doesn’t make my eyes itch. Aveda smells strongly of rose water..I’ve tried a number…lavera didn’t work either. One day!

I really like this mascara. I think it’s one of their best products in this product line.

Hi, I’m wondering if this mascara has any lengthening or thickening effects becuz I haf realli stubby and sparse lashes…thnx!

I have religiously used Almay mascara for 15 years and I have recently switched to Physicians Formula mascara. I love it and will continue to use. It does a good job of making the lashes long.

I loved this mascara. It’s a keeper. And I am only posting this message because I ended up exhausted trying all kinds of brands until I found this one and hope my input may help someone. Clinique and Lancome were terrible in my experience. Organic Wear is easy to remove. The smell bothered me only the first 2-3 days, after that I think I got used to it. The only bad thing about it, as someone indicated before, is that it is not waterproof although it doesn’t smudge as other brands. I wish they come up with a waterproof version of it.

I thought it smudged very easily throughout the day!
If you cry while wearing this mascara, it feels like someone threw acid in your eyes!!!
Very painful for quite a few minutes after crying!!

21 Donna { 07.17.10 at 1:36 pm }

I like using different brands of mascara some brands are better than others however “some mascaras are not created equal”.
For me I like to use mascara that are as natural and chemical free as possible. I will defiantly try Physician’s Organic Mascara. I will say that the tube is very “eye catching” nice job.
Thanks for sharing.

22 Diane { 08.04.10 at 8:08 pm }

This mascara really disappointed me.
It doesn’t irritate my eye in normal applications but if my eyes gets watery and it gets in my eyes…it’s not only irritating…IT BURNS!!! It feels like lemons in my eye!! And this happens if I am watching a sad movie, yawn, go swimming, or am even taking a shower.

Given that the performance is only good and not great its not really worth it for me.

As a side note I have been trying to be organic and natural with makeup. But “natural” doesn’t mean its good for you!!
Lead and Mercury are both “natural” products but they are definitely not good for you!!!

23 julena { 08.05.10 at 8:46 pm }

Sorry to hear that! I actually like the mascara, and my eyes are pretty sensitive…

And you are absolutely right about the “natural” claims. They are completely meaningless and unregulated. I actually discussed it in a post on organic skincare myths.

Hope you find a good organic mascara that works well for you and share the info with us!

Hello,
Glad to read so many positive comment about the organic wear Physician Formula, I just purchased it today and looking forward to try it tomorrow morning. I use for a long time EcoBella wich I liked but for lak of finding it in Canada, I did use Zuzu from Gabriel, wonder if the mascara turned bad sometimes, as the smell was really bad? If you think Organic wear smelly, well I thought it was good smell. Thanks for all your comment here., I am confident I will like it!

25 julena { 08.26.10 at 7:10 pm }

Organic products can turn bad faster since they don’t have the strong synthetic preservatives, though not right away. But since they also tend to have the strong synthetic fragrances, they might not have that “flowery” smell generic cosmetics do.

Personally I didn’t find anything offensive about Physician’s Formula smell either.

26 laura { 09.10.10 at 7:19 pm }

I’m a mascara junkie and I am using now the Revitalash they make your lashes nice and full without looking too fake.

27 lisa { 09.21.10 at 7:23 pm }

Thank you so much for the review, I was at the store yesterday and was looking at this exact product. I passed on it but tomorrow I will be back to try it out. Korres also makes a great mascara, it is enriched with Abyssinia oil, a conditioning botanical. I love it but feel I need a few to switch back and forth from.

28 blanca { 10.09.10 at 11:13 pm }

i am very particular when it comes to natural makeup, and besides using aubrey organics and this brand line, i have to say this mascara works great for my everyday use. the mascara is not waterproof and my eyes are also very sensitive and water alot, but i dont mind, i just use my finger to wipe the small smudges from the corners when they do(they do this even w/o makeup). The smell is fine not bothersome at all, removes easilly with coconut or almond oil. lashes look nice, natural and no clumps.i love it definitely recomend it.

29 Kelly { 11.13.10 at 1:10 pm }

I have very sensitive eyes and I decided to give this a shot over buying the expensive brands like Aveda and Jane Iredale and I have to say.. I’m /very/ impressed. It’s so easy to take off but it stays and looks good all day. Doesn’t clump, doesn’t look like I’m wearing make up, and doesn’t smudge and if I do get any on my skin it’s very easy to remove.

30 geena { 12.29.10 at 7:57 am }

I really wanted to like this product and was very disappointed by the smudges it left under my eyes after only a couple eyes of tear-free wear. I don’t want waterproof, but it needs to stay on my lashes for more than 15 minutes! Are there any good natural mascaras that stay on? Please advise!

31 indrani { 01.28.11 at 7:48 pm }

I just bought this mascara, and though I love how it goes on (very natural), I am wondering if my bottle has somehow dried out? Is it normal for barely any mascara to come out on the brush? What’s good is there are no clumps….but I need to coat a couple of times. Whereas when I’ve used MAC, for example, the brush comes out full of lots of mascara on it.

Just bought the PF Organic Mascara, and LOVE IT! I don’t know what some are talking about…there is NO SMELL at all, maybe they improved it, I don’t know bc I just bought it today, and there is no smell to it what so ever. Also all the ingredients are organic and pure, so no worries there, as well as the price, 8.74 at Wal-mart. Everywhere else (Whole Foods) are 13.00 and up! Thank you Wal-mart. Most of all they also have other organic make-up, eye shadow, liner, lip gloss, all so much better for your skin! Thank you Physicians Formula for finally a better make-up for us to wear on our face no less! Thank you.

I have to disagree with this review, in terms of quality and safety. Check out my review here:

I tried it and I am very disapointed and hope for an exchange. All the other PF products I have used have been super. However, this one ĉomes off my eyelashes in little chips and then leaves black smears under my eyes, so I look like a racoon! My mascara was basically all worn off after a few hours, which does not compare to my other regular mascaras. I used Almay in the past, and may return to them. I liked the idea of having something organic and much more natural and safe by my eyes, but I really do not like this product for me.

35 Dee Buley { 06.07.12 at 12:03 pm }

I tried the PF Organic Wear Lash boosting Mascara & found that it was very clumpy & did not apply well at all. Then about 2 hours after applying it, I looked in the mirror & found that I had mega raccoon eyes. I believe that this is the worst mascara that I have ever tried.
